Summary

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland。 The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds。 When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years。

This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel。 It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege。 Alternating menace with overwhelming tenderness, Sally Rooney's second novel breathes fiction with new life。

Good starting point for anyone considering fasting。I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have much to say about 3-5 days fasts which I find easiest。 Also disappointed as it also felt a bit like a marketing gimmick for their clinic。。 but otherwise good!

This was a little bit disappointing。 Instead of just making an argument for fasting, it seems that the authors must constantly badmouth other ways to lose weight。 I also wasn't a fan of all the anecdotal evidence that was used as facts or justification for a fasting regimen。 I'm glad I read this, but I was let down a bit。 This was a little bit disappointing。 Instead of just making an argument for fasting, it seems that the authors must constantly badmouth other ways to lose weight。 I also wasn't a fan of all the anecdotal evidence that was used as facts or justification for a fasting regimen。 I'm glad I read this, but I was let down a bit。 。。。more

Informative readThe authors had a lot of information about regular dieting and why it doesn't work。 Also, information about type 2 diabetes, and how to reverse it。 Fasting doesn't cost anything。 I would recommend this read to anyone needing to lose weight, or anyone wanting to get off the diabetes merry go round。 Informative readThe authors had a lot of information about regular dieting and why it doesn't work。 Also, information about type 2 diabetes, and how to reverse it。 Fasting doesn't cost anything。 I would recommend this read to anyone needing to lose weight, or anyone wanting to get off the diabetes merry go round。 。。。more

Fasting: a nightmare or heaven's ride? The answer to this question has been quite a journey。 After been in this journey for more than almost 2 years, one thing I can surely say is, staying informed and hydrated is THE Key。I have used my body as an experimental ground for almost everything。 Anything that interests me, I try it out on myself。 By the virtue of being a healthy individual, this has relatively been easy for me and my body mostly supports me through such experiments。 Had I not been heal Fasting: a nightmare or heaven's ride? The answer to this question has been quite a journey。 After been in this journey for more than almost 2 years, one thing I can surely say is, staying informed and hydrated is THE Key。I have used my body as an experimental ground for almost everything。 Anything that interests me, I try it out on myself。 By the virtue of being a healthy individual, this has relatively been easy for me and my body mostly supports me through such experiments。 Had I not been healthy and still did those experiments, will I get through easily? god knows and hence I say, this is an area where proper research and information is necessary before experimenting and this book provides you that。 Bursts a lot of myths and increases your confidence in your ability to fast。I started with different kinds of fast with different intensities and frequencies。 It was hard initially because I was doing it with lack of information and that's when my interest grew in the field。 I have suffered through headaches until a friend suggested me to drink enough water。 I fainted and felt dizzy many a times until a friend informed me of missing salt。 My stomach went upset too。 And add to this the common misconception of, your body can't handle hunger and hence will feel loss of energy。 Well psychological if you believe this, you feel it then。 So did I。 I desperately needed expert advice and this book has came to the rescue。This book prepares you, with all those advices, correction of misconceptions backed by science and a lot of motivation by fasting all stars stories。 Reading through this book I added a milestone to my fasting journey by smoothly doing a 36 hour water fast。 When I finish this book, I've already successful repeated it 4 times, that marks a month and the experience has been far better than my early fasts and broke all fears that existed when I started。 I encourage everyone to read it so they understand the intricacies and break myths。 A big hurdle I've faced in my fasting journey is the discouragement by my friends and family and that comes from all the misconceptions that are widespread。 It's hard to convince them and I think this book could be a great help there too。PS: If you want quick tips, check out the last chapter on FAQs。 。。。more

A good complement to The Obesity Code by Jason Fung。 Not sure if it’s necessary to read both of those books one after another。 This book contains many stories of intermittent fasting All Stars as well as FAQs and details of different fasting protocols。

Eye-opening, clear, to the pointI discovered this book on the 21st day of my extended water fasting。 It answered all my questions what is going on in my body? why? and what's next? One by one addresses key knowledge, in easily comprehensible layman terms。 The mental image of fridge and freezer are amazing。 Then the freezer behind iron bars because elevated insuline levels is priceless。 Excellent, must read book! Diving down the metabolic health rabbit hole。 Very interesting and no doubt controversial book in the medical community。 Very logical, effective and reasonably safe method with significant health benefits。

Thought-provoking take on how our bodies actually function in weight loss and other effects of limiting our food intake 12-16 hours each day。 My generation has grown up with "take in fewer calories than you expend" as the ground floor of weight loss - which apparently doesn't match the realities of hormones and cell function。 Low carb and high fat seems to be healthiest? Great read for anyone thinking of trying fasting or who is basing their thoughts on fasting on main stream media。 From time restricted fasting to 7-14 day fasts and even some recipes for non fasting days。 Lots of science but explained in an easy to understand way

Great explanation of how your metabolism works with ideas on how to use intermittent fasting as a tool for health and weight control。

I also read “Obesity Code”, which I found to be much better because it was more scientific about how the human body works。 Both books had very similar information, so I’d recommend reading only one of the two。

A good overview for those new to fasting, but overall, I didn’t learn anything new and found some of it a repetition of the Obesity Code。

“Fasting is not so much about self-denial but about a reaching for spirituality and being able to commune with God and hear his voice。 By fasting, you put your body under submission to the Holy Spirit, humble your soul before the presence of God, and prepare yourself to hear the voice of God。”“Hunger is a state of mind, not a state of the stomach。”“A little starvation can really do more for the average sick man than can the best medicines and the best doctors。”

Justin Young

It’s hard to give an honest review of this book without trying a lot of it first。 It is interesting information and would be helpful to anyone trying to lose weight for sure。 Some is definitely worth a try。 Author seems a bit on the optimistic side, I imagine in real world experiences things would be more difficult。

Awesome book ! Helps understand the process in an easier to read format than the obesity code。 Generally too easy for me as I preferred the obesity code for the science。

I'm intrigued by the topic of fasting, seeing how it is present in so many different cultures and religions around the world。 Even without the power of modern science to back it up, observational data accumulated through hundreds of years, passed and refined from generation to generation allowed humans to adopt practices beneficial for their health。 While the topic deserves much of attention not just for people struggling with obesity or diabetes, I found this "Complete Guide" to be quite lackin I'm intrigued by the topic of fasting, seeing how it is present in so many different cultures and religions around the world。 Even without the power of modern science to back it up, observational data accumulated through hundreds of years, passed and refined from generation to generation allowed humans to adopt practices beneficial for their health。 While the topic deserves much of attention not just for people struggling with obesity or diabetes, I found this "Complete Guide" to be quite lacking。 First of all, about 20% of the book in the beginning is dedicated to author's personal stories and anecdotes, repeating the same things over and over again on how fasting can be good for you too。 Second, there's just way too much ketogenic diet propaganda and keto terminology in this book。 I find personally a lot of keto diet (or any fad diet) research to be flawed with lack of long-term experimental data, and research mentioned in this book is not an exception。Third, fourth, and fifth, there's just too much material repeated over and over again。 The book could've been much shorter, but authors probably felt the pressure of the word "complete" in the title, so they filled the book with "fasting all stars"/success stories from the people I have never heard of, repeating same ideas over and over again。 I would appreciate it much more if the book would go into more details about fasting in different cultures and traditions around the world, but it just briefly goes over the topic, diving straight into diabetic and weight loss research。Overall, it is not that bad, and I've learned some useful information about different plans of intermittent fasting, different rules and precautions to take。 But some information and alternative point of view were missing, so I will most likely be looking for other books/articles after this。 。。。more

How I wish I could give this book 5 stars。 The Diabetes Code was such a good read, and Dr。 Fung really sold the idea of fasting, this book is thus a natural progression for me to read。 However this book which is supposedly "The Complete Guide" is filled with repetition, it is like a salesman continuously telling why the vacuum is the best when I am asking for how to turn it on。 I am dense but I am not a brick。 While I like to read stories about how other people succeeded with their fasts, the wa How I wish I could give this book 5 stars。 The Diabetes Code was such a good read, and Dr。 Fung really sold the idea of fasting, this book is thus a natural progression for me to read。 However this book which is supposedly "The Complete Guide" is filled with repetition, it is like a salesman continuously telling why the vacuum is the best when I am asking for how to turn it on。 I am dense but I am not a brick。 While I like to read stories about how other people succeeded with their fasts, the way that the book formats it, i。e。 throws a small segment about how great fasting is by a random person here and there, is uninformative and also uninspiring。 Perhaps I am not the targeted audience, since I only want to fast for health reasons with my 25-ish BMI, considering most of the stories involved people losing 30-50 pounds, if I lost that much weight there wouldn't be anything left。 Still 10% of the book provided me with some tips (like it's allowed to drink bone broth during a fast) so the entire books is not totally useless。 I will experiment more with fasting as the first two trials of alternate day fasting made me feel so great, finally cleared my brain fog and got deeper sleep。 。。。more

I have read several diet books, and this is by far the most educational, scientific, and encouraging。 Mindful fasting is “a secret hiding in plain sight,” with a rich history of success followed by modern backsliding。 It is simple, free, convenient, flexible, and extremely powerful。 It doesn’t just help you lose weight; it improves mental clarity, reverses insulin sensitivity, increases energy, prevents Alzheimer’s disease, and decreases inflammation。 Of course, it is not for everyone (such as c I have read several diet books, and this is by far the most educational, scientific, and encouraging。 Mindful fasting is “a secret hiding in plain sight,” with a rich history of success followed by modern backsliding。 It is simple, free, convenient, flexible, and extremely powerful。 It doesn’t just help you lose weight; it improves mental clarity, reverses insulin sensitivity, increases energy, prevents Alzheimer’s disease, and decreases inflammation。 Of course, it is not for everyone (such as children or pregnant/breastfeeding moms), but the myths of muscle wasting, “starvation mode,” low blood sugar, and nutrition deprivation are confidently laid to rest。Along the way, we are slowly and painlessly fed a master class on glucose, insulin, glycogen, ketones, cholesterol, diabetes, circadian rhythms, and the secrets of metabolism, especially the two-compartment model of calorie storage and use (glycogen refrigerator and fat freezer)。 The evils of insulin resistance and its many detriments to health are fully explored。 Dr。 Fung also makes a point to compare many other diet varieties to fasting, especially the “eat less, move more” strategy that has repeatedly failed us as a nation。I’ve often heard the term “detox” thrown around loosely by juice hawkers and the folks with healing crystals, but Dr。 Fung legitimizes this term with a clear mechanism: autophagy。 “Fasting cleanses the body of unhealthy or unnecessary cellular debris。” This includes the amyloid beta proteins in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s disease as well as precancerous cells that might otherwise become a big problem。Ultimately, the book culminates in several different fasting protocols, including intermittent fasting strategies (16-20 hours), 24-42 hour fasts, and 7-14 day fasts。 When not fasting, readers are encouraged to eat whole, unprocessed foods, reduce sugars and refined grains, eat more natural fats and less artificial fats。 This is one of the few nutrition books that doesn’t attempt to sell you a product。 There’s no pitch, just life-saving strategies。 。。。more
